Studio Session – Watercolour Technique

Discover the Joy of Watercolour – A Workshop for Beginners

Have you always wanted to try watercolour but felt unsure where to begin? Or maybe it’s been a while since you last picked up a brush? This relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop is the perfect place to start (or start again).

Together, we’ll explore the wonderful possibilities of watercolour through simple techniques for washes, layers, and textures. I’ll guide you step by step as we create small still-life paintings, giving you the confidence to experiment and enjoy the process.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll go home with a collection of fun little watercolours, along with the skills to continue painting on your own.

And the support doesn’t end when the class does — I’m always happy to answer your questions after class. Many of my students love sharing their paintings with me afterwards too — it’s a wonderful way to keep building your confidence and stay inspired.

If you’ve ever wanted to enjoy the freedom and flow of watercolour painting, this is the workshop for you!

 Suggested Materials List:

Cold Pressed Watercolour Paper – A4 watercolour pad

In this class we will work predominantly using a paper that performs reasonably well but isn’t as expensive as the professional papers.

Two suggestions would be 1. Fabriano (25% cotton 300gsm) approx $23 for A4 pad (12 sheets- blue cover) or 2. Monte Marte (rough 300gsm Signature series-pink cover with waratah) approx $12 for A4 pad (12 sheets).  The Monte Marte says rough but it’s more like a cold press.

If you already have a favourite paper please feel free to use that… however, be careful of the really cheap options out there.  They won’t perform well and you will end up frustrated!

Please don’t buy anything from KMart or Aldi etc.

A Monte Marte Discovery watercolour book 190gsm 30sheets A4 will also be a useful addition (approx $7).

This will be useful for trying things out and encourage you to be freer without worrying about how much paper you’ve used!  It doesn’t perform as well as the other paper but as something to test colour and to play it is perfect.

A selection of watercolours

Watercolour brushes – try to have a medium to large size round and a small.  But if you have other brushes feel free to bring them along as well.
