Introduction to Tone & Colour – Studio Session
There’s a lot to think about in painting and one of the most helpful ways to improve is to slow down and spend time with one core skill before moving on to another.
So that’s what we’ll do in this workshop… focus on two closely related foundational skills that underpin all painting:
1. Seeing and working with tone (value)
You’ll learn how to identify light, mid and dark tones in your subject, including how colour itself carries tonal value. Improving your ability to see and work with tonal relationships can greatly strengthen the clarity and depth of your work.
2. Mixing colour to match tone
We’ll explore how to mix colour to the correct hue, value and saturation, including:
-
Mixing specific colours
-
Creating colourful greys
-
Avoiding muddy colour mixes
-
Understanding when and where to use more saturated colour
-
Simple palette setup and working with a limited palette
To keep the learning process flowing, the main exercises in this workshop will be completed in acrylic paint (provided).
This allows everyone to move through the tone and colour-matching activities together without waiting for paint to dry.
The skills you learn transfer directly to oil, watercolour and other mediums.
For the final small study, I invite you to bring along your usual medium so you can explore how the learning applies to your own practice.
This workshop is run as a small-group Studio Session, with numbers capped at six to allow for a relaxed pace and individual guidance.
If questions come up after the workshop, you’re welcome to stay in touch — I’m happy to offer a little follow-up support as you apply what you’ve learned in your own practice.
You’re warmly invited to join me for a relaxed day of focused learning, where I’ll demonstrate the how, explain the why, and support you as you explore new ways to strengthen your own painting process.
Location… this workshop will be held in my Jervis Bay Studio. It is part of a series of Studio Sessions where the number of students is limited to 6 to ensure personalised guidance for each person. The studio is airconditioned, with a lovely garden to enjoy during breaks.
