Sketchbooking with Pen & Watercolour

A relaxed two-day workshop exploring sketchbooking with pen and watercolour wash. Learn to simplify what you see, build confidence, and create a series of small, expressive sketches inspired by your surroundings. Suitable for beginners and those wanting to loosen up their approach.

Saturday 29 August – Sunday 30 August, 9.30am–4pm each day

Suitable for ages 18+

This two-day workshop begins in the classroom with a series of simple, approachable exercises designed to help you feel comfortable working with pen and watercolour wash. By the end of the weekend, you’ll have created a collection of sketchbook pages that reflect your experience over the two days, along with a clear and repeatable approach to working in pen and watercolour wash.

Just as importantly, you’ll leave with greater confidence, a more relaxed approach to drawing, and the skills to continue sketching wherever you go.

Student Requirements: You don’t need a lot of materials for this workshop—simple is best.

  • A4 or A5 sketchbook or visual diary

  • Watercolour journal/pad or loose sheets, A4 or A5 (I prefer A5 for portability) with medium texture (cold pressed) approx. 200–300gsm (I prefer 300gsm)

  • A firm backing board if using loose sheets of paper

  • Waterproof technical pen (0.3–0.5 is ideal)

  • Optional: a second pen with a slightly thicker line

  • HB or 2B pencil

  • putty eraser

  • Small, portable watercolour set

  • Round brush (approx. size 6–10)

  • Optional smaller brush

For Working Outdoors—Weather permitting, we may spend some time sketching nearby
